While having a blog is important, driving traffic to it is the crucial bit. A blog must do more than just ‘exist’, it’s there for increasing sales.

Here’s some strategy points on how to do it.

Quality Content

If you work in marketing, no doubt you’ll have heard this a million times: “Content is king.”.

Content must talk to your target audience, be engaging and persuasive, all whilst delivering information that actually helps and keeping the reader entertained – a difficult thing to balance.

In summary, your content must be good stuff to attract traffic.

Research, Research… Research

It’s likely the topic you’re tasked to write an article for is not your core skill. There are many, many tools online that can save time with this step.

Use tools like Google Trends or keyword research platforms to find out what topics are hot in your industry. Remember, quality trumps quantity. It’s better to have fewer posts that offer real value than to churn out content just for the sake of it.

Check out forums and social media groups related to that industry to see what questions people are asking. Blog posts that only skim the surface won’t make much impact.

How-to guides need instructions, photos or even video content to be really good. Opinion pieces should have facts and stats to back up your argument. Essentially there’s much to do!

Originality Matters Too

The rise of AI makes blog writing a much easier task, but that comes with a warning. AI Content is robotic, and boring. Plus, Google’s got a sixth sense for copycats.

It’s easy to rehash what’s already been said, but original content sets you apart. Whether it’s a unique take on an industry trend, a case study based on your own experiences, or an in-depth interview with an expert, original content is more likely to be shared.

You’ll be rewarded for writing good, original content. And if it’s stolen – there are SEO penalties.

Technical SEO

Now, let’s move on to SEO. Basically, we’re helping Google fall in love with the blog. The easier Google can see the website, the more likely a favourable search ranking will happen.

Adding specific code elements to the site to make it more readable for the search engine helps this. Alt tags, meta tags etc. (The free Yoast is our recommended plugin for WordPress blogs).

Use relevant keywords, but don’t stuff them in like you’re packing for a two-week holiday in a cabin luggage bag. Be smooth. Use keywords naturally in your content, titles, and meta descriptions.

It’s also good practice to link to your other blog articles, where relevant. That helps tell Google what other articles to look at next and should push the visitor to stay longer on your site too.

Off-Site Blog Promotion Ideas

Social media is your BFF for blogging. Share your posts on your profiles. Get your audience commenting and sharing. The more engagement you get, the more your content gets seen. It’s a snowball effect but, instead of snow, it’s made of likes, shares, and comments…

Email marketing is another great way to grow a loyal audience. Encourage signups on the blog and treat them like VIPs. Send them updates, exclusive content, and a heads-up when you’ve got something new and exciting on your blog.

Partnerships

Team up with other bloggers or businesses that complement yours. Guest post on their blogs and invite them to do the same. It’s a win-win. Your content gets shares with their audience, and vice-versa.
